The Steps to Register Your Business

Have you identified your business, chosen your name, and found a location? That’s it then, you are starting the great adventure of entrepreneurship! To comply with the authorities and to finalize your launch, you must register your company with the proper departments

To register your company, you will need to complete several steps: 

  • Register with the Registraire des entreprises 
  • Registration with the Revenue Agency
  • Obtaining a permit or license
  • In addition, registration with other services

Register with the Registraire des entreprises

The first step in registering a company is to register with the Registraire des entreprises in Quebec. This organization gathers all practical information on businesses operating in the province. This information is then accessible to citizens, partners, and government agencies dealing with the registered business. During this step, you must fill out a declaration of registration on the Registraire’s dedicated online service. You can also complete this declaration in printed form. 

At the time of your registration, you will pay a company registration fee. These fees vary depending on the type of structure. It is therefore important to know your situation and the nature of your company to avoid excessive or incorrect fees. 

In exchange for the payment of your fees, you will obtain an NEQ code (or Numéro d’Entreprise du Québec). This number will be used in all your dealings with government services at a provincial level. It will also allow you to be easily identified when dealing with your clients or suppliers.

Registering with Revenu Québec

The second step is to register your business with Revenu Québec. These files include the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Quebec Sales Tax (QST), and the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

This step concerns commercial businesses with revenues exceeding $30,000. You can register online on the Revenu Québec website.

Getting your License or Permit 

Depending on your industry, you may also need a permit or license to practice when you register your company.

Some specific industries require a permit before starting their business. These include international passenger transportation, tobacco importation, and fuel refining.

Registering with Complementary Organizations 

Finally, in addition to these major steps, you may also be required to register with other services.

For example, if your company is involved in the export and import of products, you will also have to register with dedicated federal agencies, such as the Canada Revenue Agency.
